Bommanahalli Lake

Bangalore, India United Way Bengaluru (UWBe), in partnership with CSR partner Herbalife, a worldwide health and wellness firm, reached a critical milestone with the start of a restoration of the Bommenahalli Lake, which is located in Bommenahalli Village, Mandur Panchayat, Bangalore Urban area. On September 6, 2023, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in the presence of Uday Prakash, Vice-President of Operations and Finance, Herbalife India. Smt. Manjula Aravind Limbavali, MLA Bommenahalli, attended the function.

This program is part of the larger ‘Wake The Lake’ campaign, which aims to revitalize the region’s deteriorating water bodies. The ‘Wake The Lake’ Campaign aims to enhance water quality, eradicate pollutants, and revive the surrounding environment as part of a larger goal of renewing lakes and strengthening their ecosystem.

Bomenahalli Lake, which covers 38 acres, has issues from nearby urbanization, such as the potential influx of construction waste, litter, weeds, and the risk of household greywater intrusion.

The repair work will be done in two stages, from 2023 to 2025. The first phase will focus on strengthening the waterbody’s infrastructure and increasing water holding capacity by cleaning the inlet and outlet, followed by the second phase, which will involve planting 1000 indigenous saplings of fruit and flower-bearing trees, native shrubs, and herbs, raising community awareness, conducting sensitization programs, and establishing a lake association to ensure the intervention’s long-term success. The green initiative is expected to contribute to the absorption of 21,000 kg of CO2 and the annual generation of 118,000 kg of CO2.
