India’s Most Sustainable Companies
India’s Most Sustainable Companies – India has made significant progress in its sustainability measures and committment over the last year. The government has prioritised Sustainable India in its quest to become self-sufficient. The traditional and cultural ethos are strongly rooted in environmental sustainability and climatic concerns, demonstrating the Indian government’s commitment to a sustainable future. India’s route to sustainability includes clean, efficient energy systems, disaster-resistant infrastructure, and a culture that prioritises natural resource conservation.
The second edition of BW Businessworld’s India’s Most Sustainable Firms, in collaboration with Sustain Labs Paris, aims to recognize the companies who have paved the way to a more sustainable future. The list assesses businesses holistically, taking into account critical factors such as resource efficiency and employee satisfaction.
India’s Most Sustainable Companies
High-ranking officials
Major Indian corporations are represented in the top 20 of the list, alongside multinationals like Hindustan Unilever (HUL), which has been a pioneer in its sustainability drive in India and abroad.
Due to its responsible financing policies, encouragement of green housing, and integration of staff into climate strategy, HDFC was ranked among the best scorers. Tech Mahindra received high marks for its data-driven approach to sustainability and effective use of corporate skills to benefit communities. Marico is defining a standard for how suppliers are integrated into the company’s sustainability plan.
Through its many corporate social responsibility programmes, HUL has demonstrated strong performance in terms of climate resilience, carbon reduction, and community impact. In FY21, Tata Communications was ranked highly due to its transparency, gender parity in remuneration, and efficient resource utilization.
Seven of the top twenty companies are technology-driven, with FMCG companies taking three of the top ten slots. Sustainable practices have become mission-critical in industries such as banking, finance, insurance, and pharmaceuticals.
It was particularly intriguing to see several Indian companies in the top 20, such as Mahindra, Tata, and Godrej, indicating that sustainability is at the core of these organizations rather than only in certain of their business segments. These companies’ executives have made sustainability a key priority on their to-do list.
The overall picture
To make India future-ready, all efforts are required. As the Indian government strives to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns through sustainable natural resource management, waste reduction, and resource efficiency promotion, some of which are reflected in government policies such as the Zero Defect Zero Effect Scheme, Smart Cities, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), Waste Management Rules, Star Labeling Program, Perform Achieve and Trade (PAT) Scheme, and others, corporate India is becoming increasingly conscious of these issues.
